Who told that man which bin to walk to? And what did the walk cost you?
Warehousing, transport and forwarding are three businesses that keep being run as one company and accounted for as three systems. The freight forwarder who stores what he ships and delivers what he stores usually runs a WMS, a fleet package and a forwarding package, and spends the last week of every month deciding which of the three is telling the truth.
Recognise any of this
Where the money goes before anyone calls it a problem
If more than two of these are true this week, the cost is already larger than the system you would replace.
- 01
Work is picked off a list rather than dispatched to a person.
Order of work is decided by whoever reads the screen fastest, the walk path is whatever they feel like, and nobody can tell you how long a putaway should take. Every productivity conversation after that is anecdote against anecdote.
- 02
A confirmation button is pressed, but nothing proves anyone stood there.
Confirm-without-scan records that an operator pressed a button. It does not record that the goods were where the system says. The gap shows up as a stock discrepancy months later, with no way to say which of four hundred confirmations was the fiction.
- 03
The pallet is not a thing in the system. Only lines are.
The question a warehouse manager asks twenty times a day — what is on that pallet — can only be answered by walking over and looking. Cross-docking, one-scan moves and 3PL storage all fall out of the same missing idea.
- 04
Customer goods are separated by convention rather than by the system.
Quantity that belongs to the company is quantity. A warehouse that cannot separate the first customer's stock from the second's is not a third-party warehouse whatever the contract says — and it will find that out during a claim.
- 05
The 3PL invoice is rebuilt from a spreadsheet on the third of the month.
Storage, handling, value-added work and accessorials are re-derived by hand from movements nobody kept for that purpose. Leakage is invisible by construction: you cannot miss a charge you never wrote down.
- 06
Freight file margin is known after the file is closed.
Chargeable weight by volumetric and revenue tonne, duty and excise on the right base, master-to-house cost apportionment, a supplier invoice that came in above the quote — every one of those moves the number, and every one of them lands after the file has been reported.
What we build
The system that removes those, specifically
Not a feature list. Each of these exists because one of the problems above cost somebody real money.
Directed work, confirmed by scan
One screen, the next task, batched into a work order with count, time, weight and volume limits — and a confirmation that requires scanning the location's check digit, so what is recorded is that the operator stood there rather than that he pressed something.
The handling unit as the unit of movement
Nested, weighed, labelled with a real SSCC-18, and carrying its owner from the moment it exists. Cross-dock, single-scan moves and 3PL segregation stop being separate features and become consequences of one idea.
Owner-segregated stock with billing over the same events
The owner sits on the quantity, with a record rule behind it, and the billing engine runs over the movements and tasks the operation actually produced — so the storage and handling invoice is computed, not reconstructed, and does not change when it is run twice.
Blind cycle counting with a second pair of eyes
The counter does not see the expected figure, variance inside a tolerance posts itself, and variance outside it goes to somebody who is not the counter. That second condition is what stops a shortage from becoming an adjustment nobody reviewed.
Trips separated from the vehicles that serve them
The transport request and the vehicle are two records, which is what makes consolidation and multi-leg ordinary rather than an add-on — priced from a rate card instead of from a formula in the code.
Proof of delivery that survives no signal
Captured on a phone that was out of coverage, replayed exactly once on return, and not editable afterwards. A correction is a new record carrying its reason, because a POD that can be edited is not proof of anything.
The freight file costed while it is still open
Chargeable weight computed on the right basis, duty and excise on the right base, master-to-house apportionment that sums back to the master exactly, and a supplier invoice outside tolerance raising an exception before the margin has been reported.
Already built
Logix
Logix is our logistics suite on Odoo 19 — thirty modules and more than four thousand automated tests — and it is where the capabilities above are enforced rather than recorded. It also refuses things: a pallet of one owner will not nest inside another owner's handling unit, a counter is never shown the number he is counting to, a lot expiring inside a customer's contracted shelf-life window will not be picked even though first-expiry-first-out would have taken it, and a customs declaration will not be released without a payment reference behind it.
Questions
What people in this industry ask us first
Is standard Odoo Inventory not enough?
For receiving, quantities, valuation and the accounting behind a transfer, it is — and none of that gets replaced. What it does not do is dispatch. Operators hunt work off a transfer list instead of being given the next task, the pallet is not a thing the system knows about, and quantity has no owner. Those three gaps are what most of this is closing.
We are a forwarder who also stores and delivers.
That is the case worth buying for. Running a WMS, a fleet package and a forwarding package means three sets of costs that have to be married up at month end by a person who becomes irreplaceable. One event stream means the trip, the task and the file write to the same ledger, and the invoice is computed from it.
Do we need Odoo Enterprise?
For the warehouse execution side, yes — the scanning screen builds on the Barcode app and the inspection layer builds on Quality, and both are Enterprise. There is no arrangement around that and we say it before quoting rather than after. Everything else is ours.
Our warehouse is not that complicated.
Then do not buy the complicated version of it. Basic, located and directed are three levels and every feature respects the one you set, so a three-person operation is not pushed into scan-confirmed directed work. If you have one store, one van and no customer but yourself, this is the wrong purchase and we will tell you so.
